The Butterfly Lady

We were delighted to hear from Jacqui Knight, editor of “Butterflies” magazine after she read about Community Gardens in our last issue.

Metamorphosis is the process of transformation.

I know that I have undergone metamorphosis several times during my life, exchanging one ‘identity’ for another.

For example, I’ve been married, I’m a mother, I’ve been a farmer and an adventurer. I used to be terrified of public speaking but enjoy it now.

As I get older I realise that it’s important to get the message across to others how we need to look after our environment and respect Nature.

Did you know that NZ has only about twenty species of butterfly but over 2,000 moth species? Each of them performs vital roles in our survival and yet so many of us don’t understand or respect them.

How many butterfly species have you seen? Could you plant a little bit more habitat for them in your garden or on your terrace? If you have grandchildren, take a minute to show them what’s happening and feed their curiosity. This is how I began, with my young sons, learning about Nature, taking the time to find the answers to their many questions and building a lifelong bond.

You can find out more on our website, www.nzbutterflies.org.nz. You won’t regret it!
I’ve had an exciting life, with a wide variety of interests.

Over the last twenty or so I’ve been given the handle of ‘The Butterfly Lady’. I can think of much worse names to be called!

I love all things about the wilderness, but in particular our butterflies. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know.

Now I am often called upon to talk at garden clubs and service organisations or visit schools. It’s an interesting life!”

Thanks so much Jacqui from the Longevity Team.
