The Joy (or Thrill) of…..Speed

Motorsport is often more than just a little bit of excitement; it can be bloody terrifying. A little bit of terror is good for the soul. Balanced against a whole lot of excitement it’s just such a great thing.

There is excitement in every sport you undertake. With motorsport come an element of speed and danger that make it just slightly more dangerous than lawn bowls.
However in saying that if you have never been to the after match function at the NZ Women’s Bowls nationals you might be unaware that this is the most dangerous place for a man in New Zealand sport.

Our life should be all about wearing out and not rusting up. Getting your bowl close to the jack is bloody exciting, perhaps slightly just a step back from going sideways at 200kph but still exciting and we all need excitement in our lives.

Too many of us give up the great joys of our lives just because we think we should not and not because we have to. I still race because I can, and while I can I will. Yes it terrifies me at times but that’s good for me. A little bit of terror amongst a whole lot of fun and excitement keeps me young.

Yes I am slower now than I was and I was pretty slow before. In fact I have a sign on the race car that says. “The older I get the faster I was”.

Now when I look at a gap during a race and think hell there is an opportunity, some young dude has already seized the moment and has already taken it. I just admire his reactions and his ability.

So before you stop the activity the makes you smile, remember that great quote of George Bernard Shaw:
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing”
