Critter Corner – Dogs not eating

This photo was taken Xmas eve and I was very grateful to have my entire pack on this walk (minus Maddie, my 15 year old). December had been a bad month for unwell dogs and high vet bills! Fudge and Rolo, the two chocolate dogs, and Paddington, black and white boy lying down in the stream, all went down with some sort of tummy/sickness bug. They went down consectively about a week apart. I would just get one right and then boom another one fell. But it was just three out of the nine? All three dogs ended up overnight at the vets. I think Paddington stayed for two. Rolo, the first to get sick, had a very high temperature but although really sick and flat, Paddington and Fudge’s temperature stayed normal. The common symptom was not eating. It took Fudge to get sick before the vets decided that they most probably all had the same bug so at least Fudge was spared the x-rays! And to be fair Paddington does have a bit of a dodgy bowel history!  It was touch and go with Paddington and Rolo but thanks to my wonderful vets for pulling them through. As soon as Fudge did not eat her breakfast she was down at the vet and on a drip so her recovery was quicker. We are none the wiser why three out of the nine went down. The vets suspected that some of the raw frozen bulk beef I had bought them may have been contaminated as there were no other changes to their diet, environment or access to poison etc.

I think if your dog is normally a healthy eater and they do not eat suddenly along with being generally “flat” and mopey then get them to the vet sooner or later.  Rolo’s temperature was 39 degrees which is another pointer to get them to the vets ASAP.
